George Dannatt

1915 - 2009

Before his service in World War II George Dannatt had already had a succcessful career as a chartered surveyor and music critic, but an introcuction in 1955 to the painter Adrian Heath kicksarted a second career as a key figure of post-war British abstract art, working alongside Victor Pasmore, Kenneth and Mary Martin and other leading artists under the influence of Russian Constructivism and particularly Naum Gabo, who was resident in England. Through Heath, he became close to the St Ives artists, including Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and, through Ben Nicholson, particularly John Wells. Dannatt became a member of the Penwith Society of Art and Newlyn Society of Artists, and a central figure of the later St Ives School.
