William Bell Scott
1811 - 1890
Born in Edinburgh, William Bell Scott was a close associate of Rossetti and other Pre-Raphaelites. He is perhaps best known for his murals at Penkill Castle and the iconic portrait of the poet Algernon Swinburne, as well as an interpreter and populariser of the work of William Blake, through etchings and lithographs. He was a wood engraver, draughtsman, etcher, painter of historical subjects, critic and poet. In 1844, he was put in charge of the newly established Government School of Design in Newcastle upon Tyne.
