A Landscape near Sandwich, with Crane

A Landscape near Sandwich, with Crane

£800

This beautifully atmospheric watercolour, made on Steer's 1931 painting tour of the Kent coast, shows a crane looming out of the mist in the middle distance of a landscape near the east coast town of Sandwich. The crane would appear to have been in the process of loading or unloading a cart, or more likely railway wagon.

This work was lot 32 in the artist's studio sale in 1942, where it was purchased for £12 by Baxter. Ronald Gray RWS, who assisted in preparing Steer's work for the sale, wrote an inscription on the backboard. The work was clearly thought good enough to frame, rather than appearing in the portfolio sale the next day.
