Coastal Landscape at Dusk with Castle Walls and distant Headland

In the 1820s Varley made a number of these small, elgiac varnished watercolours. The classical composition, evening colours and mood and glossy finish are all intended to be reminiscent of Claude Lorraine, although the small size and jewel-like quality set them apart.
Please note that the white specks, particulalry in the dark areas to the lower right, are largely small reflections off the varnish. There is a very small loss of the top left corner which has been replaced with a small piece of painted card stuck to the mount, not the watercolour. This could have been (and was previously) covered by close mounting, but that would have prevented us seeing the whole of this lovely watercolour.
