Tessa Newcomb
1955
Born in Suffolk, the daughter of the artist Mary Newcomb, Tessa would meet well-known artists like Ben and Winifred Nicholson, and she started painting early in life. She trained at Norwich School of Art and Bath Academy of Art, then studied printmaking at Wimbledon School of Art. While teaching art and ceramics in Suffolk and Norfolk, Newcombe built up a body of work depicting the surrounding countryside and coast, much of it featuring local events and people with good humour. She has exhibited extensively, notably at Crane Arts, Mercury Gallery and Christopher Hull Gallery, Chappel Galleries, Crane Kalman Gallery and Ainscough Contemporary Art. With her partner, Telfer Stokes, the son of artists Adrian Stokes and Margaret Mellis, Newcombe lives close to the Suffolk coast in Wenhaston, near Southwold.
