Painted driftwood model boat
Painted driftwood model boat
Newcomb has made and exhibited a number of painted model boats out of driftwood, timber and hardboard offcuts. In the present work, the artist has included some marine rope and a sinuous mermaid. Newcomb has lived for many years on or near the Suffolk coast, and boats and the shoreline near Southwold feature in much of her work. Rather than 'IH', the fishing boat registration code for the Ipswich area, 'IP20' indicates an Ipswich area postcode.
It may be noted that her partner's mother, Margret Mellis, made many sculptures from painted driftwood found on Southwold beach, and Stokes himself also uses found metal and other materials in his sculpture.
