Unity Spencer

1930 - 2017

Unity was the second daughter of Stanley Spencer and Hilda Carlie, born at her parents' home in Hampstead. Following the break-up of the Spencers' marriage, Unity lived with her mother, while her sister Shirin was sent to live with a relative, and the sisters grew up apart. Unity's life was dominated by the effects of her parents' break-up, as well as an ill-starred relationship with Leslie Lambert, which resulted in a son born in 1963. In the last 18 months of her life, Unity moved to live in Cowbridge, South Wales, with her son and sister. Unity trained at Wimbledon and the Slade School of Fine Art, in succession to her father. As well as her paintings, some of which echo Stanley's subject matter, Unity made a series of individual and characterful lithographs.
