A Girl's Head (The Flowered Tocque)
A Girl's Head (The Flowered Tocque)
Several of Augustus John's etchings feature decorative hats and headgear, and this is one of the most appealing of these. He made three etched portraits of the same young woman in 1913-14, shortly before the outbreak of World War I. The plates remained unpublished until after the war.
This is a fine impression of the single state, from the edition of fifty signed copies, published by the Chenil Gallery in November 1919, on white laid paper with full margins, deckle edges watermarked 'G.C & Co' and a light mount stain beneath the new mount. On the recto, the print is signed 'John' in pencil, and below this, it is inscribed in pencil with the title and 'Aug. E. John R', 'M4109' (also inscribed on the verso), 'CD.68'' and '50 Proofs'.
As indicated in the inscription, this print is No. 68 in Campbell Dodgson's 'Catalogue of the Etchings of Augustus John'.
