Alice Knewstub (1867-1957) was an actress, with the stage name Alice Kingsley, who married William Rothenstein 1898 Their four children, John (director of the Tate Gallery), Betty (who owned this drawing), Rachel and Michael (the artist), were born between 1901 and 1908. Rothenstein made many studies and well-known paintings of Alice by herself or with her their young children. This drawing would seem to show Alice pregnant, presumably with their daughter Betty, who owned the drawing.

Red chalk was a medium commonly used in the years around 1900, particulalry by students and graduates of the Slade School of Fine Art. Indeed, Alice posed for Augustus John in an 1898 drawing in the medium.
